AT THE STORE
Responsible retailers should offer only portable fuel containers that are designed and certified for consumer use. But these examples are very prevalent.
REPLACEMENT SPOUTS
There are several manufacturers of replacement spout kits, including a cap and push in vent. The PFCMA believes that the purpose of these spout kits is to eliminate child resistant closures and the environmentally friendly features of modern, certified gas cans. They promote that “No more time should be wasted fiddling with those impossible EPA cans! Update your old can and go back to pouring gasoline the American way!”
“RACING FUEL”
Fuel containers labelled “solely intended for racing fuel only” avoid the regulations that apply to consumer portable fuel container.
But they are marketed (especially on-line) as consumer gas cans even though retailers “ought to know” they will be used as normal gas cans.
“NATO” CAN
These claim to be approved, legal products but are labelled “not for fuel use”. The manufacturer explains “It is to comply with the CARB standard. It is not a childproof cap” (Amazon)
SAFETY CANS
Safety cans should only be sold to contractors for industrial and commercial applications. But they are very often sold in the same display as portable fuel containers designed and qualified for consumer use.
AT THE PUMP
Regulations require that only qualified containers are filled with fuel and that filling is done on the ground to prevent potential static ignition of vapor.
